ABOUT YOUR ADRIATIC JOURNEY

This is more than a journey through Croatia’s most beautiful destinations – it is an opportunity to experience the landscapes, flavours, stories and people that make the Adriatic truly unforgettable.

Croatia offers an extraordinary diversity of experiences – from ancient cities and medieval island towns to hidden coves, vineyards, local cuisine and the relaxed rhythm of Adriatic life. We begin our journey just beyond Croatia’s southeastern border in Montenegro, where dramatic mountains, medieval towns and the spectacular Bay of Kotor provide an unforgettable introduction to this remarkable corner of the Adriatic.

From there, the journey follows Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, beginning in the magnificent walled city of Dubrovnik, continuing through Korčula, Vela Luka and Hvar, before travelling along the spectacular coastline to Omiš and finishing in Split, where Roman history meets contemporary Adriatic life.

  • MONTENEGRO: We begin our journey just beyond Croatia’s southeastern border in Montenegro, where dramatic mountains, medieval towns and the spectacular Bay of Kotor provide an unforgettable introduction to this remarkable corner of the Adriatic.
  • DUBROVNIK:  We then cross into Croatia and arrive in Dubrovnik, the legendary “Pearl of the Adriatic” on the southernmost tip of the Dalmatian coast. Three nights allow time to explore its magnificent Old Town, historic walls, hidden streets, galleries, waterfront cafés and spectacular coastal scenery.
  • KORČULA & VELA LUKA:  Leaving the grandeur of Dubrovnik behind, we continue to Korčula Island, discovering its medieval Old Town before travelling across the island to Vela Luka. Here, vineyards, olive groves, traditional villages and the slower rhythm of authentic Dalmatian island life take centre stage.
  • HVAR: From Vela Luka, the journey continues to Hvar, Croatia’s glamorous island gem, where luxury yachts, beautiful beaches, historic streets, vineyards, fine dining and spectacular Adriatic sunsets create an unforgettable island experience.
  • OMIŠ:  Our journey then follows the dramatic Dalmatian coastline to Omiš, where towering mountains meet the sea and the emerald Cetina River flows into the Adriatic. Once home to legendary pirates, this charming coastal town offers a wonderful blend of history, scenery and adventure.
  • SPLIT:  The journey concludes in Split, where the ancient world and contemporary Mediterranean life exist side by side. Built around the extraordinary Roman palace of Emperor Diocletian, Split provides a fascinating finale before departure back to Johannesburg or an onward journey for those wishing to extend their travels.

AT A GLANCE, THE CROATIA  JOURNEY INCLUDES:

  • FLIGHTS: Return economy-class flights from Johannesburg to Montenegro and departing from Split back to Johannesburg.
  • ACCOMMODATION: For purposes of preparing a standard package, we will book comfortable self-catering apartments, 1 – 2 – 3 or 4 bedroomed units or holiday homes, priced either individually or shared.  For those who prefer, hotel accommodation is definitely an alternative option. Apartments are typically a minimum of a good South African 3* standard.  Hotels range from 3 – 5*.
  • GETTING AROUND: A combination of flights, private transfers, ferry crossings and rental vehicles for scenic road journeys and exploring the coast at a relaxed pace.
  • MEALS & BEVERAGES: Meals are not included, allowing everyone the freedom to experience the region’s wonderful food culture in their own way – from fresh pastries and coffee at local bakeries to traditional Dalmatian restaurants, seafood, wine tastings and relaxed waterfront lunches.
  • ACTIVITIES: We believe in giving travellers the freedom to choose their own experiences. Activities are therefore not included in the package price, but we provide an extensive selection of suggested highlights to enjoy – either together as a group or independently. Activities can be arranged and paid for directly on the day.

YOUR ADRIATIC EXPERIENCE: This journey is not simply about beautiful places, but about the stories behind them. Montenegro, Dubrovnik, Korčula, Vela Luka, Hvar, Omiš and Split each have their own distinctive character, shaped by centuries of history, culture, tradition and the people who call these remarkable places home.

“Across the Adriatic, the warmth, resilience and hospitality of its people are as memorable as the places themselves.”

THE NATURE OF THE JOURNEY &
PRACTICAL INFORMATION

This is a journey designed to give you the best of both worlds - the comfort of having the important details organised, together with the freedom to enjoy each destination in your own way.

While the major logistics, accommodation and travel arrangements are taken care of, there is plenty of space to make the journey your own. You may choose to explore independently, join fellow travellers for an activity or excursion, follow one of our recommendations, enjoy a meal together or simply find a beautiful waterfront café and do absolutely nothing at all. Some days you may all head off together. On others, smaller groups may form naturally, while some travellers may prefer a little time to themselves.

There is no pressure to do everything together, and no expectation that everyone will experience each destination in exactly the same way. After all, part of the joy of travelling is discovering what captures your imagination. The journey provides the framework. What you do with it is yours.

About the Accommodation

Accommodation is included in the tour price.

Accommodation is selected with comfort, flexibility and a more authentic local experience in mind, with self-catering often providing the best option for experiencing each destination at your own pace.

Where possible, we choose accommodation within the historic Old Towns, allowing travellers to step outside their accommodation and immediately experience the character, atmosphere and local life of each destination.  Depending on the destination, travellers will stay in comfortable self-catering apartments or holiday homes, broadly comparable to a South African 3-star-plus standard.

These typically range from one to four bedrooms, are fully equipped with kitchens, en-suite facilities and, depending on the property, additional shared bathrooms. Most also offer comfortable lounge and dining areas, as well as outdoor porch or terrace spaces.

Travellers have the option of individual accommodation or sharing, depending on availability and the chosen arrangement.  Alternatively, should you prefer hotel accommodation, we are happy to include this in your package where possible, with any additional costs applied accordingly.

TRAVELLER’S TIP: Where possible, we love to stay within or close to the historic Old Towns. Accommodation is also available in the more modern parts of each destination, but staying in the Old Town offers something truly special — stepping outside your door and immediately being surrounded by centuries of history, local life and the sights, sounds and aromas of the city. There is something wonderfully surreal about waking up in a place where people have lived, worked and gathered for generations.

Activities & Excursions

Activities and excursions are not included in the tour price. Instead, we provide a selection of recommended experiences at each destination.

Travellers can choose which experiences appeal to them, whether that means a boat excursion, wine tasting, cultural visit, hiking, kayaking, diving or snorkelling, sightseeing, or simply enjoying a leisurely day by the sea.

TRAVELLER FREEDOM: This journey is designed to give everyone the freedom to experience Croatia in their own way. You are welcome to join an organised activity, team up with some of your fellow travellers for an excursion or outing, or simply do your own thing for the day.

There is no expectation that everyone will do everything together. Plans can naturally evolve throughout the journey, with different groups forming for different activities, meals or excursions — while others may prefer some time to themselves.

The only important principle is mutual respect and consideration for one another’s choices. This flexibility is part of what makes the journey enjoyable, relaxed and personal for everyone.

Meals & Beverages

Meals are not included in the tour price.

This gives travellers the freedom to experience the wonderful food culture of Montenegro and Croatia in their own way.

The self-catering accommodation also makes it easy to enjoy a relaxed breakfast or light meal at home. One can simply pop out to a local bakery or market for freshly baked breads and pastries, seasonal fruit, local produce, beverages and snacks.  This makes for perfect convenience for an easy breakfast, a picnic lunch or something to enjoy before heading out for the day.

Of course, there will also be plenty of opportunities to eat out. From morning coffee and pastries to waterfront lunches, traditional konobas (local Croatian taverns), fresh seafood, grilled fish, traditional Dalmatian dishes and Croatian wines, discovering the local food culture is very much part of the journey.

We will also provide recommended restaurants and local food experiences in the various destinations but the choice is yours – whether you feel like preparing a simple breakfast at your apartment, enjoying a long lunch overlooking the Adriatic or dressing up for a memorable dinner, you can decide what suits you each day.

TRAVELLER’S TIP: Keep an eye out for a konoba (plural: konobe) during your travels. These traditional Croatian taverns are generally relaxed, informal places serving regional food and local wines. Originally associated with homes and farms where food, wine and olive oil were stored, konobe have evolved into some of the best places to experience authentic Dalmatian cooking. Don’t be surprised if a simple meal in a small family-run konoba becomes one of your favourite memories of Croatia.

Getting Around

One of the pleasures of this journey is the variety of ways we experience the Adriatic. The itinerary combines private/local transfers, ferries and scenic road journeys, allowing us to move comfortably between destinations while still experiencing the landscape along the way.

Private Transfers with Driver / Guide
For the main movements between destinations, we use local transfer services and appropriate transport arrangements rather than asking the Tour Leader or individual travellers to take responsibility for transporting the group.

This approach allows everyone to relax and enjoy the scenery, while also ensuring that the appropriate local licensing, insurance and passenger-transport requirements are in place.

Ferries & Island Travel
Several stages of the journey involve ferry crossings between the mainland and the islands. Ferries are an important part of travelling through Dalmatia and are very much part of the experience. Travellers should be comfortable managing their own luggage when boarding and disembarking.

Exploring Independently
The journey also allows considerable freedom to explore independently. Travellers who would like to rent a car for a particular day or for their own private excursion are welcome to do so, subject to the rental company’s requirements, insurance conditions and applicable local driving regulations.

Anyone choosing to drive should ensure that they have the appropriate South African driving licence and, where required or requested by the rental company, an International Driving Permit (IDP). The IDP must be carried together with the original South African driving licence.

TOUR LEADER’S TIP: Don’t feel that you need a car for the entire journey. The beauty of this itinerary is that the major transfers are organised for you, while you can choose to rent a car independently for a particular day if you want to explore further afield. This gives you the best of both worlds — the freedom of self-drive when you want it, without the responsibility of driving for the group.

VELA LUKA
Adriatic Tranquillity

Do absolutely nothing at all . . . Vela Luka is the perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon by the water, enjoying the sea breeze, watching fishing boats drift across the bay and discovering that sometimes the greatest luxury is simply having nowhere to be.

Island Life

  • Relax on the peaceful pebble beaches, settle into a waterfront café or beach bar and embrace the slower rhythm of island life.
  • Wander the harbour and discover the Culture Centre of Vela Luka and other glimpses into the town’s local heritage.
  • Discover secluded coves and neighbouring islands by boat, kayak or paddleboard.

TOUR LEADER’S TIP:

  • Walk up to Fortica (Španjola Fortress) for spectacular views across Hvar Town, the Adriatic and the Pakleni Islands.

  • Explore the historic streets of Stari Grad, founded by the ancient Greeks more than 2,400 years ago.
  • Visit the abandoned stone village of Malo Grablje and experience traditional Dalmatian cuisine.

THE ALLURE OF CROATIA

CROATIA

Stretching along the sparkling Adriatic, Croatia unfolds as a remarkable tapestry of ancient cities, island landscapes, cultural heritage and vibrant coastal life.

Rich in history and shaped by centuries of changing empires, cultures and traditions, Croatia combines an extraordinary architectural heritage with a relaxed and contemporary way of life. Its people are warm, welcoming and deeply proud of their homeland, while the country’s resilience through periods of conflict and political change has helped shape the Croatia travellers experience today.

From magnificent medieval architecture and UNESCO World Heritage sites to crystal-clear turquoise waters, idyllic islands, cobbled streets and picturesque harbours, beauty seems to appear around every corner. Explore monasteries and museums, discover vibrant art and café culture, wander through lush forests and rolling hills, or linger over some of the finest cuisine and wines of the Adriatic.

TRAVELLER’S INSIGHT: Whether wandering the ancient walls of Dubrovnik, island-hopping through Korčula and Hvar, exploring the Roman heritage of Split, or venturing into the dramatic landscapes of neighbouring Montenegro, this journey brings together history, nature, culture, cuisine and relaxation in one unforgettable Adriatic adventure.

MONTENEGRO, a dramatic Adriatic prelude

Where rugged mountains plunge into the Adriatic and medieval stone towns cling to the shores of the spectacular Bay of Kotor,

Just beyond Croatia’s southeastern border lies a country of extraordinary contrasts – dramatic limestone peaks, deep blue bays, ancient fortified towns and quiet villages scattered along one of Europe’s most spectacular coastlines. The Bay of Kotor, surrounded by towering mountains and dotted with historic settlements, is the natural centrepiece of this opening chapter.  Explore the beautifully preserved medieval town of Kotor, with its narrow stone streets, atmospheric squares and ancient walls climbing dramatically towards the mountains. Wander the waterfront of Perast, discover centuries-old churches and palaces, or simply pause to absorb the extraordinary scenery where mountains and sea meet.

Montenegro also offers a glimpse into the rich cultural influences that have shaped the eastern Adriatic, from Venetian architecture and maritime traditions to centuries of trade and interaction between the coast and its mountainous interior.

TRAVELLER’S INSIGHT: Montenegro feels like a secret revealed at the very beginning of the journey – a place where mountains rise directly from the sea, medieval towns seem suspended in time, and every bend in the road reveals another extraordinary Adriatic view.

DUBROVNIK, the Pearl of the Adriatic

Encircled by magnificent medieval walls and poised above the shimmering Adriatic, Dubrovnik is one of Europe’s most extraordinary historic cities.

Within its ancient stone walls, centuries of history meet a sophisticated contemporary lifestyle. The famous Stradun, elegant squares, narrow lanes and hidden stairways lead to historic churches, museums, galleries, boutiques, cafés and restaurants, creating a city that feels both timeless and wonderfully alive.  A walk along the City Walls is essential, revealing spectacular views across the terracotta rooftops, the Adriatic Sea and the city’s formidable fortifications. Above Dubrovnik, Mount Srđ offers an equally breathtaking perspective, reached by scenic cable car. At the summit, the Homeland War Museum provides a moving insight into Croatia’s War of Independence and Dubrovnik’s experience during the conflict.

For many visitors, Dubrovnik is also familiar from the screen. Older generations may remember its significance during the Croatian War of Independence, while younger travellers will recognise its medieval streets and fortifications as major filming locations for Game of Thrones.

TRAVELLER’S INSIGHT: Step inside Dubrovnik’s Old City and it is easy to understand its cinematic appeal. Carefully preserved medieval streets, stone buildings, historic churches and formidable walls retain much of the character of the city through the centuries – creating an extraordinary living historic landscape.

The Islands of KORČULA & VELA LUKA

Medieval charm, island life and Adriatic tranquility

Korčula Island is an enchanting medieval town often called “Little Dubrovnik” for its stone architecture and fortified walls and the Old Town is a delight to explore on foot. Wander its narrow cobbled streets, discover Venetian architecture, artisan boutiques, cafés and galleries, and soak up the relaxed atmosphere of this beautiful island town.

Across the island from Korčula Town, lies Vela Luka, a picturesque fishing town nestled around a sheltered bay.  Vela Luka offers a slower, more relaxed rhythm. Spend leisurely mornings on the waterfront, explore surrounding vineyards and olive groves, visit family-owned wineries or simply enjoy a meal overlooking the harbour as fishing boats come and go.  For those seeking adventure, there are opportunities for scuba diving, kayaking, cycling and boat excursions to secluded beaches and nearby islands. History enthusiasts can visit Vela Spila Cave, one of the Adriatic’s important prehistoric archaeological sites, with evidence of human occupation stretching back thousands of years.

TOUR LEADER’S TIP: Some of the best moments on Korčula are the unplanned ones – a roadside wine stop, a hidden viewpoint or a simple table overlooking the sea.

HVAR, the Adriatic's most fashionable island

Hvar is where centuries of island heritage meet the sophisticated energy of the modern Adriatic.

Renowned for its beautiful harbour, historic architecture, Mediterranean landscapes and vibrant social scene, Hvar has long attracted discerning travellers seeking sunshine, fine dining and an elegant island escape.

Life centres around Hvar Town Harbour, where yachts fill the waterfront and cafés and restaurants spill onto the promenade. Behind the harbour, narrow medieval streets climb towards the impressive Fortica Fortress, where spectacular views stretch across the town, Pakleni Islands and the Adriatic.

During summer, Hvar’s waterfront comes alive with stylish beach clubs, sunset dining, music and nightlife, while the island’s quieter corners offer vineyards, fragrant lavender fields, secluded coves and beautiful coastal scenery.

TRAVELLER’S INSIGHT: Hvar effortlessly combines historic charm, natural beauty and contemporary island glamour – making it one of the Adriatic’s most alluring destinations.

OMIŠ, where the mountains meet the sea

Tucked between dramatic limestone mountains and the sparkling Adriatic, Omiš is one of those places many travellers pass by — and one of the most rewarding stops to discover.

Set at the mouth of the Cetina River, this small medieval town combines spectacular scenery, fascinating history, beautiful beaches and a wonderfully relaxed local character. Once home to the legendary Omiš pirates, its historic centre is a maze of narrow stone streets overlooked by rugged mountains and ancient fortifications.  The setting is extraordinary: the emerald Cetina flows between towering cliffs before meeting the deep blue Adriatic, creating a landscape that feels almost hidden from the coast beyond.

For the adventurous, the Cetina River and surrounding mountains offer opportunities for rafting, kayaking, hiking and ziplining, while the town itself invites a slower exploration of its streets, cafés and waterfront.

TRAVELLER’S INSIGHT: Omiš is a delightful contrast to Croatia’s grand historic cities – smaller, wilder and wonderfully authentic.

SPLIT'S contemporary Adriatic life

Built around the extraordinary palace of a Roman emperor, Split is a city where ancient history and contemporary Adriatic life exist side by side.

At the heart of the city stands Diocletian’s Palace, built in the early 4th century as the retirement residence of Roman Emperor Diocletian. Far more than a monument, the palace forms the living centre of modern Split, with homes, cafés, restaurants, shops and narrow streets woven into its ancient walls.  Wander through the Peristyle, explore the atmospheric cellars and medieval lanes, and discover centuries of Roman, medieval and Venetian history layered throughout the Old Town. Beyond the palace, the Riva waterfront is the perfect place to pause for coffee, enjoy a leisurely meal or watch life unfold along the harbour.

Split is the perfect finale to the journey — a city where 1,700 years of history remain part of everyday life, and where the ancient and the contemporary meet effortlessly beside the Adriatic.

TRAVELLER’S INSIGHT: Look closely as you wander Split’s Old Town and you’ll discover that the ancient palace is not simply preserved around the modern city – the modern city has grown inside it. That remarkable living connection between past and present is what makes Split so captivating.

ADDITIONAL TRAVELLER INFORMATION

Visas, Passports & Entry Requirements

All travellers on this journey will be travelling on South African passports. Visa, passport, health, vaccination and all other entry or travel requirements are the sole responsibility of each individual traveller.

The Tour Leader can provide general guidance and point travellers towards the relevant official sources, but requirements can change and each traveller must ensure that they hold the correct documentation and meet all requirements applicable to their own circumstances.

Please check the current requirements for Montenegro, Croatia and any transit countries well in advance of departure, and ensure that your passport meets the required validity conditions.

Useful visa and travel requirement resources:

  • TravelDoc – a useful tool for checking visa and travel requirements based on your passport and itinerary.
  • Sherpa – provides up-to-date travel requirement information based on your nationality and destination.

These resources are helpful starting points, but travellers should always verify their final requirements with the relevant government authority, embassy or consulate before departure.

TOUR LEADER’S TIP: Don’t leave visa and travel-document checks until the last minute. Requirements can change, and allowing plenty of time gives you peace of mind and plenty of opportunity to resolve any issues before you travel.

Luggage Considerations

We recommend packing as lightly as possible. July is a hot time of year in Montenegro and Croatia, so a large winter wardrobe certainly won’t be necessary!

There is, however, another good reason to keep luggage manageable. This is an island and coastal journey involving ferries, transfers and historic Old Towns, where vehicles cannot always access the accommodation directly. There may be occasions when you need to move your own luggage a short distance, carry it on and off a ferry or manage it over cobbled streets and steps.

A smaller, easily manageable suitcase or travel bag makes the journey considerably more comfortable.

Montenegro – Croatia Border Crossing

As we travel from Montenegro into Croatia, we will cross the international road border between the two countries.

Our route is expected to use the Debeli Brijeg – Karasovići border crossing, the principal road crossing between Montenegro and Croatia on the route towards Dubrovnik. Travellers should have their passports readily accessible and allow some flexibility in the itinerary for border formalities, particularly during the busy summer season.

Border procedures, waiting times and any applicable requirements can change, so the final arrangements will be confirmed closer to departure.

Currency & Cash

Both Montenegro and Croatia use the euro (€), making currency management particularly straightforward throughout the journey.

Cash can easily be obtained from ATMs at the relevant airports and in towns and cities along the route. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, although it is always sensible to carry a small amount of cash for smaller cafés, markets, local purchases and places where card facilities may not be available.

We recommend notifying your bank of your international travel dates and checking any foreign transaction or ATM withdrawal fees before departure.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for participation in this tour.

Your policy should provide appropriate cover for international travel, including medical expenses, emergency assistance, cancellation or interruption and luggage, as applicable to your circumstances.

As Tour Leader, I am happy to assist with obtaining insurance quotations and, where possible, to help travellers understand the options available. However, each traveller is responsible for selecting and purchasing a policy that provides appropriate cover for their own needs.

Optional Onward Travel

The Adriatic journey does not necessarily have to end when we reach Split!

Travellers who would like to extend their adventure before or after the tour are very welcome to do so, and I am happy to assist with ideas and planning.

TOUR LEADER’S TIP: Consider continuing your travels from Split by taking the overnight ferry to Venice, Italy, before exploring further through Italy and flying home from there. Alternatively, you could add extra time in Croatia, continue to another European destination such as Romania, or even consider joining a cruise departing from Split.

There are many possibilities – and extending the journey can be a wonderful way to turn a two-week Adriatic adventure into something even more memorable.
